About MAS
MAS is an insurance and investment company that caters to professionals through its membership-based model.
Unlike other companies, MAS operates as a mutual society, where you become a member and shareholder. This means they don’t prioritise big profits and dedicate themselves to serving members.
Their advisers are also paid salaries with no commissions, ensuring they always have your best interest at heart.
The company’s roots go back to 1921 when it was established by doctors for doctors. Over the years, it’s expanded its services and now more than 80% of the medical professionals in New Zealand are insured with MAS.
They’ve grown to welcome all professionals, as well as their friends and family offering business insurance, investments and lending solutions.
MAS takes a responsible approach to investments
Celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2021, it’s proud to be a unique insurance company with a strong focus on serving the community. They believe that when Kiwi communities prosper, they also win.
This commitment is reflected in their “here for good” philosophy, which guides all their actions and initiatives.
They also collaborate with the Sustainable Business Network, exchanging ideas with like-minded companies.
In their investment business, they follow a responsible investment strategy, ensuring money is invested in a sustainable and socially responsible manner.

Important steps to follow when making a business insurance claim
In light of the challenges entrepreneurs face in establishing and maintaining their businesses, MAS empathises with your concerns.
They provide fully customised and independent business insurance solutions that align with the unique requirements of your business, offering comprehensive coverage right from the outset.
These are the steps you need to follow to make a business insurance claim
- Inform MAS as soon as you become aware of any loss or liability that may be covered under your policy
- Minimise further loss or liability and complete the claim form if requested
- The insured must allow MAS to investigate and inspect the loss or liability, providing reasonable justification for the claim along with any necessary information or assistance
- Permission should be granted for this company to obtain personal information related to the claim from other parties
- Forward all relevant information and correspondence
- In cases involving burglary, theft, arson or intentional damage, you should report it to the police
- Make reasonable efforts to gather details of any other parties involved, including persons, properties, or vehicles, as well as any potential witnesses
Key information to disclose for an accurate business insurance quote
When taking a business insurance quote with MAS, it's important to disclose all relevant information. This includes anything that could affect the insurer’s decision to accept the application and the terms of the policy.
Examples of information to disclose are:
- Factors that increase claim risk
- Criminal convictions
- Previous insurance claims
- Any refusals by other insurers to provide standard coverage
It’s important to inform MAS about such details during policy renewal or if there are any changes in the business’s situation. Failure to disclose material information may have consequences and could impact policy coverage. Being open and transparent ensures proper insurance protection.
Exclusions and conditions to be aware of
Under MAS’ policy, there are general exclusions and conditions to be aware of. There’s no coverage for claims from:
- Terrorism
- War
- Nuclear incidents
- Confiscation by government or local authority
- Leaking buildings with moisture or mould issues
- Subterranean fire or erosion
- Earthquakes or volcanic eruptions
There’s no coverage for liability or physical damage arising from communicable diseases, including the fear or threat of such diseases. Any losses related to cyber liability or physical damage to computer systems aren’t covered.
Physical damage to a computer system and consequential losses are an exception to this exclusion. These exclusions ensure that the policy does not provide coverage for losses specifically related to communicable diseases or cyber incidents.
