About NZI

For over 160 years, NZI has been dedicated to safeguarding Kiwis throughout New Zealand.

Their extensive experience has equipped them with the knowledge and expertise to anticipate and navigate the unexpected, ensuring you unwavering support through both favourable and challenging times.

Navigating challenges and building resilience since 1859

Established in 1859, NZI takes great pride in its rich heritage as one of New Zealand's oldest insurance companies. Over the years, their organisation has experienced significant growth through strategic acquisitions and mergers, accumulating a wealth of invaluable experience and knowledge.

During the late 1800s, a period marked by rapid expansion and the shifting dynamics of the insurance industry, New Zealand Insurance (as it was then known) navigated through the challenges brought about by the decline of the British Empire, rising nationalism, and the impact of the Great Depression.

In 1905, they ventured into the accident insurance field by acquiring the New Zealand Accident Insurance Company. This enabled them to underwrite various risks across Australasia, including plate glass and burglary insurance.

The power of merger and collaboration in shaping NZI's future

The latter half of the 1900s brought new challenges in the form of increased competition, rising insurance rates, and inflationary claims pressures. Notably, in 1975, the devastating impact of Cyclone Tracy on Darwin resulted in the largest single loss since the San Francisco fire in 1908, highlighting the resilience required in the insurance industry.

In response to compounding pressures and recognising shared interests and complementary strengths, New Zealand Insurance and South British Insurance merged in 1981, operating under the umbrella of the New Zealand South British Group with the NZI brand.

In 2003, NZI became part of the Insurance Australia Group (IAG) when it was acquired by IAG's subsidiary, IAG New Zealand Limited. Today, they’re thrilled to continue serving New Zealanders, drawing upon their extensive heritage and expertise. With unwavering dedication, they look forward to another 160 years of providing exceptional insurance solutions to safeguard your aspirations and future.

Staying ahead of industry changes to safeguard your valuables

As one of New Zealand's longest-established insurers, they take immense pride in assisting countless Kiwis in overcoming losses over more than 150 years. Unveiling the truth: The crucial importance of disclosure

Taking proactive measures to protect your property can minimise the risk of further damage or loss. NZI acknowledges this and is committed to reimbursing you for reasonable costs incurred in mitigating further damage or loss when making a claim.

Important aspects of the application that you need to know

  • Duty of disclosure – It’s crucial that you disclose all relevant information that may influence the underwriter's decision on accepting your application, including terms and costs. Examples of information to disclose include increased risk factors, criminal convictions, previous insurance cancellations or refusals, and past vehicle losses or damages.
  • Details of the applicant(s) – Please provide the necessary personal information, including names, dates of birth, and contact details for the applicant(s).
  • Vehicle details – Specify the type of vehicle you’re insuring, such as a car, motorcycle, caravan, trailer, or other. Select the desired coverage type, provide vehicle details (make, model, registration number, etc.), and indicate the market value or sum insured.
  • Optional covers and excess – Choose additional covers like NZI Roadside Assist and Named Drivers Discount, if applicable. Decide whether to exclude drivers under 25 for a premium discount or apply the Low Km option. Select your desired policy excess amount.

Become familiar with the declaration and agreement

Answer the declaration questions regarding previous accidents, driving offences, criminal convictions, insurance history, and any other relevant information. Read and agree to the terms and conditions of the policy. Provide your signature and date.

Indicate your preferred payment option (annually, quarterly, or monthly) and complete the necessary payment details. Make sure to keep the receipt for future reference.

If you have any doubts or need clarification on specific information, don't hesitate to seek assistance by asking questions or consulting the agent.

NZI car insurance claims

In the event of a motor vehicle accident, it’s crucial to gather the details of any other parties involved, including their name, address, and vehicle registration number.

If you experience a broken car window or windscreen, you can contact Novus or Smith & Smith to arrange for immediate repairs. In most cases, this type of claim will not impact your policy. For non-structural vehicle claims, Repairhub, conveniently located across New Zealand, is your go-to solution.

Swift reporting for prompt resolution

In the event of any damage or loss, it’s vital to report it promptly to your insurer, including any potential claims. If you encounter difficulties reaching your broker, you can contact NZI directly.

If you suspect that the damage or loss was the result of something illegal, they urge you to notify the police as soon as possible.

Keeping proof of purchase and receipts safe is essential, as you may need them to support your claim. If feasible, keep any items that are damaged in case they need to be examined or if it’s necessary, report the damage. To aid in the claims process, they strongly recommend taking as many photos as possible to document the loss or damage accurately.
