Why should you have car insurance in New Zealand?

Car insurance is important in New Zealand to protect yourself financially from potential risks and liabilities associated with owning and operating a vehicle. Accidents, damage, theft, and other unforeseen events can result in significant expenses.

Car insurance provides financial coverage and peace of mind by helping to cover repair costs, medical expenses, liability claims, and other related expenses.

Is car insurance mandatory in New Zealand?

While car insurance is not legally required for all drivers in New Zealand, it’s highly recommended. It’s mandatory to have third-party car insurance if you want to register your vehicle with the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).

Third-party insurance covers you for damages caused to someone else's property or injury to others caused by your vehicle. Comprehensive insurance, which covers damage to your own vehicle as well, is not legally required but is strongly advisable.

From accidental loss to vicarious liability: Understanding your policy's extent

Coverage, exclusions, and additional benefits

The policy covers accidental loss for different levels of coverage. Under Comprehensive Cover (CC), sudden and accidental loss to the car during the period of cover in New Zealand is covered. Under Third Party, Fire & Theft (TPFT) cover, sudden and accidental loss caused by fire, theft or attempted theft, or natural disaster is covered. However, under Third Party Only (TPO) cover, there is no coverage for accidental loss.

Under CC, there’s coverage for accidental death and permanent disablement, with specific amounts provided for different events. Exclusions are mentioned, such as not covering death resulting from suicide or self-inflicted injury.

Other benefits include excess protection, coverage for keys and locks, legal liability for bodily injury or property damage, coverage for general average charges during transit, coverage for other people's liability while using the car with permission, and coverage for reparation in case of committing an offence with the car.

From alcohol to terrorism: 6 Surprising exclusions that leave you vulnerable

  • Alcohol, drugs, and other intoxicating substances: There is no coverage if the driver of the vehicle exceeds the legal alcohol limit, refuses a breath or blood test after an accident, or is under the influence of drugs or intoxicating substances to an extent that they cannot control the vehicle. Failure to stop or remain at the scene of an accident also voids coverage unless the vehicle was stolen, provided a complaint is filed with the police.
  • Electronic data and programs: Losses associated with electronic data, including damage, costs, expenses, prosecutions, or liabilities, are not covered unless they result in physical damage to other covered property that is not otherwise excluded.
  • Intentional or reckless acts: Losses arising from intentional or reckless acts or omissions by you or anyone covered under the policy are not covered.
  • Modified vehicle: Coverage is not provided for vehicles that have been modified unless the details of all modifications are provided to the insurer and a written agreement for continued coverage is obtained.
  • Unlicensed drivers: There is no coverage if the driver does not comply with the conditions of their driver's license or is not legally allowed to drive in New Zealand, unless the vehicle was stolen, provided a complaint is filed with the police.
  • Wear, tear, depreciation, and loss of use: Depreciation, wear and tear, rust or corrosion, loss of use, gradual deterioration, and consequential losses are generally not covered unless otherwise stated.
