About MAS
MAS was established in 1921 by doctors who had a vision.
Since then they’ve grown to become one of the go-to insurance and investment companies. More than 80% of the medical profession trusts them for their insurance needs.
Today, they extend their services to all professionals, their friends, and their families, offering a comprehensive range of insurance, investment, and lending solutions.
A mutual society: Your interests at heart
What sets MAS apart from others is its unique structure as a mutual society. As a member-owned organisation, it doesn't answer to external shareholders seeking massive profits. Instead, you become a valued member, shaping the direction of the company.
This structure ensures that they always have your best interests at heart. Their dedicated advisers, who receive salaries with no commissions, are focused on serving you and providing unbiased advice.
Caring for the community
With a foundation laid by doctors, it's no surprise that MAS is deeply committed to serving the community. Their philosophy of being "here for good" is the driving force behind everything they do.
They take a long-term view and actively seek ways to make a positive impact on New Zealand communities.
The MAS Foundation, their philanthropic arm, supports health initiatives that improve the well-being of underserved communities.
By joining the Sustainable Business Network, MAS collaborates with like-minded companies to operate more sustainably. They also ensure that investments are made responsibly and sustainably.
Empowering well-being: Free access and support
MAS goes beyond traditional insurance services to prioritise your overall well-being. Membership gets you free access to the Āki Wellbeing Hub.
This is an online resource centre providing tools and practical advice for enhancing physical, mental, nutritional, and financial health. They also offer three free EAP counselling and support sessions. This ensures you have access to professional assistance when needed.
Inspiration and knowledge: MAS talks
Through the engaging MAS talks series, you have the exclusive opportunity to hear from influential and inspiring speakers. These events provide a platform for personal growth, learning, and networking.
Previous guests have featured esteemed Canadian science journalist Alanna Mitchell and internationally celebrated wildlife photographer David Yarrow. These events, held across the country, offer an enriching experience and the chance to connect with like-minded individuals.
MAS: Your reliable and caring partner
With a rich history, strong community involvement, and a commitment to ethical practices, MAS stands out as a reliable and caring partner for New Zealand professionals. They’re here to protect what matters most to you and with them, you’ll experience the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re in good hands.
Tailored for your needs: Personalised solutions for every stage of life
One of the key strengths of MAS is its ability to provide personalised solutions that cater to your diverse needs at every stage of life. Whether you’re a young professional just starting your career, a family planning for the future, or a retiree enjoying the fruits of your labour, they've you covered.
Their experienced advisers understand the unique challenges and goals that accompany each life stage, and they work closely with you to develop tailored solutions that align with your specific circumstances.
MAS Services
The core of MAS’s home contents insurance lies in its replacement value cover option.
In unfortunate events like theft, burglary, accidental damage, fire, malicious damage, explosion, adverse weather conditions, or legal liability, they ensure that your home contents are protected.
This means they'll cover the repair or replacement costs of your contents with items of equal value, guaranteeing you always have "new" things in place of the old ones.
Comprehensive included bonus benefits
Contents insurance by MAS goes above and beyond to cater to your needs. It includes several bonus benefits, such as:
Protect your life and valuables
In case you experience an injury leading to an unexpected death, MAS provides $20,000 to your beneficiaries. Personal effects also receive extended coverage with a limit of $5,000 for each item up to a claim limit of $50,000, even for items purchased abroad. A maximum of $1,000 for cash or pre-paid cards are also covered.
Comprehensive home and office protection
Should your primary residence become uninhabitable, MAS offers a limit of $50,000 to cover reasonable costs of alternative accommodation during assessment or repairs. Property related to your home office or medical practice is also covered to a limit of $25,000 at home and to a limit of $5,000 outside.
Protection for your child's possessions
Your children's personal belongings are insured while they’re enrolled in full-time study, residing at boarding school or tertiary accommodation, and even when their items are stored at your home.
Items in storage or on the move
Temporary storage in a specialised facility is protected against accidental loss by restricted perils. Belongings being permanently relocated to a different address anywhere in New Zealand are insured against accidental loss under limited risks.
From cyber-bullying aid to support for major losses
MAS offers coverage limited to $5,000 for costs arising from cyber-bullying, preserving your claims-free bonus.
Damages caused by emergency services during entry are covered to a limit of $10,000. For restricted entry to your residence based on safety considerations or emergencies, MAS home contents insurance also covers alternative accommodation costs.
They also cover substantial losses exceeding $100,000, providing an immediate $5,000 cash aid for recuperation.
Cover for food loss, decay damage & moving safety
If your deep freezer malfunctions, MAS offers coverage up to $2,000 for food loss. MAS provides a maximum reimbursement amounting to $5,000 for concealed decay, mould, or degradation caused by leakage originating from within the property.
The expense of acquiring new locks and keys due to loss, damage, theft, or replication is also covered without impacting your claims-free bonus. MAS home contents insurance automatically includes coverage for your items when you move to a new residence for up to 30 days.
Ensuring all-round protection for pairs and complementary pieces
In cases where repairs or replacements cannot restore a part of a matched set or pair, MAS resolves the claim as if the complete pair were implicated.
- Content cover for grandfolks and parents: While residing in a retirement home, end-of-life care centre, or similar facility, your parents' or grandparents' belongings are automatically covered.
- Health maintenance products: Assistive listening devices, dental prosthetics, eyewear, and other personal health items are covered without affecting your claims-free bonus.

- Step 1: Complete the quick online form to receive a quote tailored to your needs. Provide essential details such asyour name, contact information, and indicate whether you’re already a MAS member.
- Step 2: Answer a few important questions to ensure accurate quoting. This may include some additional information. Tell them if you've been affected by recent weather events or disasters. Also, indicate the desired start date for your insurance coverage.
- Step 3: Describe your living situation and help them estimate the ideal contents cover for you by providing details about your contents and where they’re kept. Share your address, city, and indicate whether you've got a burglar alarm or sprinkler system installed.
- Step 4: Determine the value of your contents and specify the sum you want to insure your contents for. Remember, the minimum value they accept is $15,000. If you have any specified items like jewellery, sporting equipment, or art, list them along with their description, purchase date, and insured sum.
- Step 5: Take control of your premium costs by adding a voluntary excess to your policy. You can choose from different excess amounts ranging from $200 to $2,000, in addition to the compulsory excess.
- Step 6:Supply relevant information to ensure the accuracy and validity of your insurance policy by disclosing any criminal activity, convictions, previous insurance history, or loss and damage to your contents within the last five years.
- Step 7: Select your preferred premium payment method. Whether it's through direct debit, internet banking (annual lump sum), or credit card (annual lump sum), the choice is yours.
To complete the application process, please take note of the following:
It's important to disclose all information that may affect your insurance application. Make sure your answers are truthful, complete, and accurate. Failure to disclose relevant information could result in claim rejection or policy cancellation.
Making a claim made simple
When claiming lost or damaged contents, follow these helpful guidelines:
- Prioritise preventing further damage before submitting a claim. If there's an immediate issue like a burst water pipe or smashed windows, address it first and keep any receipts for potential reimbursement.
- Prepare an inventory of the items you're claiming. Include any supporting documentation such as receipts, valuations, warranties, or photos.
- Submitting your claim is a breeze and takes approximately 10-15 minutes. If you have a MAS account, you can save your progress and complete it later. Once submitted, you'll receive a summary of the information you provided.
